Biella boasts many important examples of archaeology, art and architecture, from the remains of Ancient Roman times to jewels of romanesque architecture. In the city we can admire the basilica and cloister of San Sebastiano, a splendid example of renaissance architecture with its interior entirely decorated with frescoes.
Along the mountain stream of the Cervo rise the imposing industrial structures of the nineteenth century that constitute an enviable heritage of industrial archaeology. Amongst the other sites of archaeological interest are the fascinating ancient roman gold mines to be found in the Special Natural Reserve of La Bessa, where the high mounds of pebbles bear witness to the mining activity that took place so long ago and which today take on a look that is both mysterious and unique.

Scattered over La Serra are numerous examples of vernacular Romanesque architecture, notable amongst which is the church of San Secondo at Magnano. Testimony to the medieval period are the charming borgo of Masserano, at one time a Papal fief, and the celebrated Ricetto of Candelo the fortified village built by its inhabitants in the 14th century and perfectly preserved to this very day.
The greatest examples of the seventeenth century are represented by the Sanctuaries perched on the slopes of the mountains which are linked by long, peaceful paths winding through panoramic countryside. The star of these is the Sanctuary of Oropa where the most famous architects of their day, working at the royal court of Turin, vied with each other to create a Baroque extravaganza. Not to be overlooked are the lesser Sanctuaries of Graglia and San Giovanni of Andorno and many other sites of charm and character.
The history of Biella's well-known textile industry is represented by the wealth of industrial archaeology rising above the rushing mountain streams that once provided both water and energy for the mills and factories.
